How to check if an image is a deepfake
1. Upload the image
Drag in a JPG, PNG or WEBP file up to 4 MB. Use the highest-quality copy you have; screenshots of screenshots lose detail.
2. Run the analysis
The image is scored by two AI models: one for signs of AI generation and one for face swapping.
3. Read the result
You get a verdict (likely real, uncertain, or likely AI-generated or deepfake), both scores and, when available, the AI generator the image most likely came from.
4. Check the context
Reverse-image search the picture, look for the original source and compare it with recent photos from trusted channels before sharing or acting on it.
What the free image checker detects, and its limits
What it looks for:
- AI-generated images: pictures created by popular AI image generators rather than a camera, including fake profile photos and fabricated scenes.
- Face-swap deepfakes: a real photo with someone's face replaced, where a face is visible.
Limits to keep in mind:
- It is not built to detect ordinary edits such as cropping, filters or retouching.
- Heavy compression, small faces, very low resolution and screenshots reduce accuracy.
- Scores are probabilities, not proof. A low score doesn't guarantee an image is authentic, and a high score is not legal evidence.
- One image at a time, up to 4 MB, with 5 free checks per visitor per day.
Spotting fakes by eye: check lighting and shadows on the face against the scene, look at ears, hairlines, glasses, hands and teeth for warping, and be sceptical of images that arrive with a dramatic claim and no primary source.
When to run a deepfake image check
- A suspicious profile photo on a new follower, recruiter, candidate or dating match.
- A photo of an executive or public figure in a news-style post you can't trace to a source.
- An image used in an ad or endorsement that your brand never approved.
- User-submitted photos that a newsroom, marketplace or trust and safety team needs to verify.
- A picture of you that you don't remember being taken.
How DeepWall monitoring goes beyond one-off checks
The free image checker tells you about one picture you already have. DeepWall's deepfake detection software is a paid service that monitors newly uploaded videos for your face and voice, so you hear about impersonation you haven't seen yet. It does not monitor standalone images; the photos you enroll are the reference used to match your face in video frames.
1. Enroll your face and voice
Upload 3 to 5 photos of the person to protect, plus a 30-second voice sample. DeepWall turns them into a reference profile that new content is compared against. You can update or retrain a profile at any time.
2. Continuous scanning of new uploads
DeepWall scans newly uploaded videos on the platforms it monitors in the background, around the clock. You don't paste in links or upload files.
3. Frame-by-frame matching
Faces in each video are matched frame by frame against your enrolled photos, and the audio track is compared against your voice sample. Each match gets a confidence score.
4. Alerts and evidence
You set a confidence threshold from 0 to 100%. Matches above it trigger an alert by email, SMS, push, Slack or webhook, depending on your plan. Professional and Executive plans add a timestamped evidence PDF and takedown-request templates.
DeepWall monitors newly uploaded videos on YouTube, X, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit and news sites with embedded video. The Starter plan covers YouTube and X; Professional and Executive include all seven sources. See pricing for the full plan comparison.
Start monitoring with a free trial
Enroll 3 to 5 photos and a voice sample, set your threshold and let DeepWall watch new videos for you. Plans start at $49 per month, with no sales call required. Every plan (Starter, Professional and Executive) includes a 30-day free trial with no credit card required. Cancel anytime.

Deepfake image detection FAQ
How do you detect a deepfake image?
Detection models look for the statistical traces that AI generators and face-swap tools leave in an image. Upload the picture to the free checker on this page to get an AI-generated score and a face-swap score, then confirm with a reverse-image search and the original source.
Is this deepfake image detector free?
Yes. It's free with no sign-up. Each visitor can check 5 images per day, in JPG, PNG or WEBP format up to 4 MB each.
Can you tell if an image is AI-generated?
Often, but not with certainty. Models catch many AI-generated images that look convincing to the eye, but accuracy drops with compression, small faces and heavy edits. Treat the score as one signal, not proof.
What is the difference between an AI-generated image and a face-swap deepfake?
An AI-generated image is created from scratch by a model such as an image generator. A face-swap deepfake starts from a real photo and replaces the face with someone else's. The checker scores both separately.
What happens to the image I upload?
DeepWall analyses the image in memory and doesn't save it. It is sent to our detection provider for analysis, and the provider deletes files after processing.
Does DeepWall monitor social platforms for fake images of me?
Not as standalone images. DeepWall's paid monitoring scans newly uploaded videos on YouTube, X, TikTok and four other sources for your face and voice. Use this free checker for individual images.
What should I do if I find a fake image of myself?
Save the image, the link and a screenshot with the date, report it to the platform, and if needed send a takedown request. If the impersonation spreads to video, DeepWall's Professional and Executive plans include timestamped evidence exports and takedown templates.
